Routine used car maintenance

In order to get the best out of your used car, it is important to learn how to perform some basic routine maintenance on the it; this will help to further your understanding of cars in general and help you to appreciate what is needed for your vehicle to run smoothly…

Not only does routine maintenance help the car to continue running at its best for longer, it also saves on experiencing problems further down the line, such as labour intensive and costly repairs in professional garages.

For those who are wary about ‘getting their hands dirty’ with car maintenance, the best first port of call is to literally get your hands dirty by becoming accustomed with the relatively simple task of oil maintenance. This should always be attempted at least 10 minutes of so after the engine of the car has been turned off; this gives the oil time to settle in the engine and will ultimately make for a more accurate reading. It requires the oil dipstick to be removed and wiped down with a cloth or rag; then it should be returned to its holder, and after a few seconds, removed again in order to establish an accurate oil-level reading.

A similarly easy, yet vital piece of routine maintenance for newcomers to become experienced in in the windscreen washer fluid levels. Unlike the changing of the oil, the amount of windscreen washer fluid is easily visible in the opaque container underneath the bonnet of the vehicle. Once it reaches a suitable low level, it should be replaced by removing the container’s cap and pouring the appropriate amount of fluid in. It is important to note that there are two different type of windscreen cleaning fluid that vary seasonally: Summer and Winter. The Summer solution is usually pink; it is milder and used for cleaning debris such as insects and droppings from the vehicle. Meanwhile, the Winter fluid is usually blue in colour due to the fact it contains antifreeze; this helps to remove ice from the windscreen, as well as dirt during the Winter months.

ITG – Intake Now available for TSI Engines

ITG Maxogen’s Induction kit for modern TSI engines is now available for 1.4 and 2.0 TSI engines within the VW Scirocco and Mk6 Golf.

Apparently the kit is excellent at ramming in more cold air with limited heatsoak, than some other induction kit efforts on the market. Cold air kit performance is always questionable when feeding a turbocharged engine but apparently the ITG kit really makes a big difference when looking at stage two remap set ups where the engine needs to be able to breath more.

Milltek

This is the brand new Volkswagen Scirocco GT 2.0T and it has been fitted with the first of two different designs of performance exhaust system from Milltek. Milltek Sport have already started development and testing on a full turbo back system which will be suitable for high output vehicles and trackday cars. This product is now available with Ceramic tips.

Pivot plugin gauges coming soon…

Pivot have a line of gauges in the works that will use the car diagnostic port rather than rely on piped feeds from the engine compartment or other traditional feeds from the car to display their data.

Pivot Plugin Gauges

The gauges utilise the cars diagnostics connector to collect and process information. No word yet on whether this is collected by a cable running from the diagnostics post to the gauges themselves or if the information is transmitted wirelessly via a plug in dongle.

We’ll have to wait until they’re released in October to find out.

B&B Scirocco R

Scirocco R B&B

This Volkswagen Scirocco R tuning by B&B takes the 261 hp up to an impressive 306 hp. Torque has also been increased from the R version’s 350 Nm to a new level of 410 Nm at 1,900 rpm, and that’s just the first level of the tuning version.
